While spring may have started on Ipchun, it’s not until the plum blossoms bloom that I feel like it’s really begun. Before the cherry blossoms steal the spotlight, plum blossoms, or maehwa, bloom in late winter, usually from late February into March. They’re smaller, more delicate, and often carry a lovely soft fragrance that lingers in the cold air (though it’s warming up fast down here in Jeju Island!). Plum blossoms don’t explode all at once like the cherry blossoms. You’ll find a tree here and there, in palace corners, temple courtyards, and along quiet village streets. In Korea, the plum blossom symbolizes resilience and hope because they bloom while winter is still holding on. If you’re visiting Korea in early spring, don’t wait for the peak cherry blossom season. Look for the plum blossoms firsts. They’re the real first sign of spring. Follow @thesoulofseoulblog for more moments from Korea. #매화 #plumblossom #springinkorea #spring #visitkorea
