In West Iceland’s Borgarfjörður district lies Hraunfossar, a captivating series of waterfalls where clear, cold springs emerge from beneath the Hallmundarhraun lava field, cascading into the Hvítá river. Stretching over 900 meters, these “Lava Falls” offer a unique spectacle as water streams through porous lava rock, creating countless rivulets and cascades. The Hallmundarhraun lava field, from which Hraunfossar emerges, was formed by an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier Langjökull. The waterfalls pour into Hvítá (Borgarfjörður), from ledges of less porous rock in the lava. Adjacent to Hraunfossar is Barnafoss, or “Children’s Falls,” named after a local legend involving the tragic loss of two children. The contrasting dynamics of these neighboring waterfalls—Hraunfossar’s gentle flow and Barnafoss’s more turbulent waters—provide a rich experience for visitors. Accessible year-round, Hraunfossar offers changing beauty with the seasons. In winter, icicles adorn the lava rocks, creating a frosty wonderland, while autumn brings a tapestry of warm colors to the surrounding birchwoods. A viewing platform near the car park provides panoramic vistas, and well-marked trails allow for leisurely exploration. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, photographer, or traveler seeking serene landscapes, Hraunfossar’s enchanting beauty is sure to leave a lasting impression. #Hraunfossar #IcelandWaterfalls #icelandtrip
