🕊️🇰🇷Memorial Day, or Hyunchungil - 현충일, as it’s known in Korean, is celebrated on June 6th annually and is recognized as a public holiday in South Korea. It’s not just an extra day - it’s a day where the contributions of all those who served their nation are honored. This day of remembrance has been observed since 1956, shortly after the conclusion of the Korean ​war. At 10 a.m., a siren is heard throughout the country, marking a nationwide moment of silence. Even the busiest streets come to a halt as respects are paid and prayers are offered for those soldiers who gave their lives for their country. It’s an impactful moment that sees the nation unified in respect and remembrance. ​ A memorial ceremony is hosted at the Seoul National Cemetery, in the presence of the President, other government officials, and civilians. Respect is paid to those who lost their lives in war. A special song for Memorial Day is played during the ceremony. It’s not uncommon to see the Korean national flag proudly displayed on front doors throughout June, signifying respect and honor for the sacrifices made by Korean soldiers. Fascinatingly, schools across South Korea hold events prior to Memorial Day, where drawings related to the day are created by students or letters are written to soldiers currently posted at the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) between North and South Korea. The importance of the day and the impact these brave soldiers have had on Korean history are discussed.
