Siglufjörður: Where Herring Made History ⚓❄️ Welcome to Siglufjörður, a quiet town in North Iceland with a big story to tell. On this snowy March day, I explored the Herring Era Museum — and stepped straight into Iceland’s past. This place brings the “Great Herring Adventure” to life, when herring wasn’t just fish — it was gold. During the early 1900s, it fueled Iceland’s economy and helped shape the path to independence. Norwegian fishermen brought new methods, and towns like this grew fast. The star of the museum is Roaldsbrakki, a restored salting station from 1907. Inside, you can imagine the sound of herring being packed and salted by the famous Herring Girls — strong, skilled women who worked long summer hours and brought incredible energy to the harbors. In the Boathouse, historic fishing boats like Týr SK 33 show what life at sea was like. These ships kept coastal towns alive, bringing in fish that fed Europe through both World Wars. Though the herring disappeared in 1969, its legacy still lives here. If you’re heading north, don’t miss this slice of Icelandic history. It’s the perfect mix of stories, salt, and snow. #Siglufjörður #HerringEraMuseum #IcelandHistory #icelandtrip
