My number one travel tip for Japan: Go beyond Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Fuji—also called “the Golden Triangle”. These are wonderful places and if you have your heart set on seeing them, great! But they’re also overwhelmed (see: recent tourist bans in Gion), and there’s so much more to Japan than just its most well known cities (and volcano 😜). Plus, there are many parts of Japan that are not overcrowded and would be happy to see more visitors. Some of my favorite destinations include: 1. Hiking the Kumano Kodo Trail: this is an ancient pilgrimage route on the Kii Peninsula south of Osaka and SO beautiful. (🔗link in bio for our full itinerary!) 2. Visiting Naoshima, one of Japan’s “art islands” in the Seto Inland Sea. In fact, the island used art and tourism to revive the island, after it fell in a bit of decline. 3. Joining the Apres-Ski scene in Niseko. I don’t ski, but Jon can attest: that part is pretty awesome too 😎 What about you? What are some of the most underrated places to travel to in Japan that you’ve been to? #japantravel #japantraveltip #japantrip #japan_of_insta #explorejapan
