ITINERARY ⬇️ Comment "waterfalls" to get your FREE waterfall map with these exact spots + more! One of my favourite drives in Aotearoa is from Dunedin into the Catlins. Here’s a 1-day (or slow-travel 2-day) itinerary you can follow: 📍 Kick things off with a coffee and brekkie in Dunedin’s Octagon. If you have time, check out the street art trail or head up Baldwin Street (the world’s steepest street) before hitting the road. 🌊 About 1h30 from Dunedin, park and take the short 20-min walk to the Nugget Point Lighthouse for insane coastal views and, if you’re lucky, sea lions down below. Sunrise is magic here. 💦 Drive deeper into the Catlins (around 1h15 from Nugget Point) to Purakaunui Falls. It’s an easy 10-min forest walk to one of NZ’s most photographed waterfalls — especially lush after rain. 🌿 Only 20 minutes further south will get you to McLean Falls. A slightly longer 20-min walk through native bush takes you to a two-tiered waterfall that looks like something out of a fantasy movie. It’s the highest waterfall in the Catlins and my personal fav! 👉 Tips: Take it slow if you can — stay overnight in the Catlins to enjoy quieter mornings, bring snacks/fuel (there’s limited options for eating out), and be prepared for gravel roads and winding sections. ✨ Follow @getlostwithliam for more epic NZ road trip itineraries! #travelnz #roadtripnewzealand #beautifuldestinations #visitnewzealand
