Here’s how you can experience this for yourself 👇 As of today (10/11/2025) this massive bioluminescent algae bloom is still going strong! Auckland’s Hibiscus Coast is a hotspot for this kind of activity but this is on another level that even seasoned pros have never seen before. The bloom appears to be moving rapidly throughout the bays each night, so you may have to do some sleuthing in different spots, however these are some areas that are worth checking out: 🌅 Orewa Estuary 🏖️ Red Beach 🐚 Stanmore Bay And if you want a quieter experience, another big bloom has been spotted around Waiheke Island’s northern coast multiple nights in a row now! To make sure this is the best possible experience for you and others, please: 🕯️ Go when it's dark and give your eyes at least 10 minutes to adjust without using a flashlight 🔍 Look for clues during the day: A red or discoloured slick on the water can indicate a bloom 🌬️ Keep expectations realistic—photos often use long exposures 🧤 The glow is triggered by water movement (waves, people, paddling) IMPORTANT ⚠️ 🔦 Avoid bright torches, flashes or phone screens pointed at the water. If you need a torch, use a red filter or point it downward. 🤫 Stay mindful of night-time beachgoers—keep voices down, avoid large disruptive groups, and be aware of photographers trying to capture the moment. ♻️ Leave no trace: Take all rubbish with you, don’t leave food or drink litter, and avoid setting up bright lights or loud music. 🏊‍♂️ If you go into the water, stay shallow, swim with someone, and be aware of tides and waves — even if you’re mesmerised by the glow. 📱 Large crowds gather when these blooms happen—so avoid large flash photography or bright phone screens that ruin the natural ambience for others.
