Waterfall Wednesdays: Wellington Edition 🏞️ Today’s spot is for those that like a slight adrenalin rush! This is the Mighty Kelson Waterfall in Parereho Forest. I actually didn’t expect to have to wade through a stream cutting through steep terrain on this one 😂 I didn’t make it all the way up to the main falls, as I didn’t want to venture too far without the dogs. Next time I'll definitely be more prepared. I’m bringing you a different waterfall to explore in my hometown every Wednesday, these spots are all extremely precious so please make sure that if you visit, you visit responsibly, and respect these amazing places we are lucky to live so close to! Your guide to visiting the Mighty Kelson Waterfall: 🥾 Trail: Mighty Kelson Waterfall in Parereho Forest 🅿️ Parking: Free. Park outside the main entrance to Parereho Forest on Waipounamu Drive. 📅 When to visit: Year-round. However, avoid doing the trail through the stream to the base of the falls after it has rained! Flooding is a major risk with nowhere to escape due to the steep gully. 📏 Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult. The trail is well-marked and maintained until you reach the stream. 🏔️ Elevation: Approximately 150 meters. 🤫 Secret: You can follow the Waipounamu Loop for a much easier trail that takes you to a lookout over the waterfall. However, if you want to get to the base, you will have to take the path up the stream shown in this video. 👧👦 Family-friendly: The lookout walk is perfect for families, however, young children should avoid taking the path up the stream! ♿️ Accessibility: Not accessible due to uneven terrain and steps. 🚽 Facilities: No toilets 🦮 Dog-Friendly: Dogs are allowed on a leash. 🕶️ Shade: The trail is mostly shaded by lush native forest, providing a cool and pleasant walk even on warmer days. 🛂 Tips: Bring waterproof shoes (e.g. reef shoes or crocs) if you don’t want to go barefoot. 🗑️ Leave no trace: Always respect the places you visit. 🙏 Follow @naturewithliam for more waterfalls, trail guides, and tips for exploring the great outdoors! #connecttonature #waterfallwednesdays #nzplacestovisit #thingstodoinwellington #bestwalksinnz
