The hardest but most rewarding hike ever! 🌋 Seriously how many people can say that they’ve been on an active volcano? #wendanvsguatemala #wendanvsworld If you’re traveling to Guatemala and are feeling adventurous, I highly recommend doing this, but here are some tips and things I wish I knew beforehand ⬇️ • If you’re of average physical fitness, this hike will be doable but challenging. I thought I’d made a huge mistake when during the pre-hike orientation our guide made everyone go around, introduce themselves and share WHAT SPORTS THEY PLAYED 😳 I am not athletic and was so intimidated when everyone else mentioned that they climbed or played soccer or ran marathons when I played ZERO SPORTS but I survived the hike just like everyone else • GET A PORTER. I cannot emphasize this enough. Unless you have experience hiking long distances with a heavy backpack (you’ll be carrying food, water, clothes, etc. for 1.5 days) this will be crucial. I don’t know what I was thinking when I thought I didn’t need one but luckily I was able to get one at the first rest point. • Wear the right shoes and clothes. You definitely need good hiking shoes; it’s not impossible in sneakers but you’ll have a much easier time. And it get really cold at night so bring lots of layers!! I had to borrow a windbreaker from another hiker because I was not prepared 😅 • The sunset hike up to Fuego and the sunrise hike to the summit of Acatenango the next morning are optional. We did the first one and skipped the second because we were so tired. Honestly the view of Fuego from base camp is excellent so don’t feel bad if you don’t do those. • You’ll be at high altitude (~11,000 ft) and altitude sickness is a real possibility. Luckily we didn’t experience any severe symptoms but 1 person in our group did. • There are several tour operators in Antigua that offer this hike, we went with @oxexpeditions and they were great! Is this hike on your bucket list yet?
