Golden Pavilion (Kinkakuji) covered in snow is breathtaking, but Daigoji in the snow was equally mesmerizing. Truly. To be honest, this was the first time I found myself whispering, “Beautiful…” to a temple without even thinking. Daigoji Temple, a renowned Shingon Buddhist temple, has a history of over 1,100 years. Its vast grounds are home to a five-story pagoda, a designated National Treasure. Founded in the Heian period by Shobo Rigen Daishi, it has been a place of deep devotion for emperors and samurai, including Emperor Daigo. During the Sengoku period, Toyotomi Hideyoshi famously hosted the “Daigo no Hanami” (Cherry Blossom Viewing of Daigo) and played a significant role in restoring the temple. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving invaluable cultural artifacts and esoteric Buddhist art. The legendary “Daigo Water” still flows as a sacred spring.
