A purveyor to the Imperial Court from the reign of Emperor Go-Yōzei—and later following the court to Tokyo—its patrons ranged over the centuries from the Imperial Household and court nobles to daimyo and merchant dynasties such as the Mitsui family.   Its name, “Tiger House,” nods to Bishamonten: in Japanese lore he appeared at the Tiger’s hour, day, and year, making the Tiger his auspicious sign.
