Here’s your guide ⬇️ Save this for later if you’re planning to explore the Marlborough Sounds! The Marlborough Sounds are one of the most underrated places in New Zealand, with their endless bays, hidden coves, and wild, untouched landscapes. I remember taking the ferry from Wellington and first entering the sounds, it was like a dream! ⏳ WHEN: Spring and autumn are perfect—summer is nice but it can get busy, but the shoulder seasons mean quieter trails, great weather, and more affordable accommodation. 🚢 HOW: You can take the ferry from Wellington (an experience in itself!) or fly into Blenheim and drive to Picton. From there, water taxis, kayaks, and hiking trails will take you deeper into the sounds. If you want a more immersive experience, consider renting a boat or staying in a remote lodge only accessible by water. 📸 WHAT TO DO: Hike the Queen Charlotte Track – One of NZ’s best multi-day hikes, with insane coastal views and easy water taxi options if you don’t want to do the full 73km. Kayak through the sounds – Paddle alongside dolphins, stingrays, and even orcas if you’re lucky. Try the Kenepuru or Pelorus Sound for the best wildlife spotting. Visit Motuara Island – A predator-free wildlife sanctuary where you can spot rare native birds and even little blue penguins.
