When we decided to live outside of Seoul, it was a pretty big conversation. I had only known living in Seoul my whole time in Korea. A lot of people assumed when we said we wouldn’t be living in Seoul that we’d be headed down to Busan, where my husband is from. Headed south we were, but just a bit further. Now we’ve lived on Jeju Island for six months and while some of the conveniences of Seoul are missed (I have to drive to get pizza and chicken and Chinese food?!?), the benefits (some financial, but mostly wellbeing) outweigh those. I loved Seoul in my 20s and then 30s, but needed something calmer, not only for me, but also my daughter, where she can run outside and I’m not worried for her safety, where a community of people vigilantly watches and cares. Living outside or Seoul is very different, but for this moment, in this time, we love it. There is a calm and serene feeling and of course, being able to go the ocean whenever we feel like it, just makes life better. Do you live outside of Seoul? Even better, in a village with one convenience store and one restaurant that may or may not be open on a schedule? Share your experience.
