East Harbour Regional Park is one of the most underrated spots near Wellington, with wild coastal trails, panoramic hilltop views, and a scenic bike ride to Pencarrow Head. I spent a whole day here and still didn’t see it all—if you love hiking or cycling you need to add this to your list. ⌚ When to go – Autumn and spring are ideal for hiking—cooler temps and fewer people. If you’re biking to Pencarrow, a calm day makes all the difference (Wellington winds are no joke). Summer is nice too but the sea can be very rough here so you won’t find a good swimming spot easily! Plus shade is very limited. ⛴ How to get there – The best way to reach Pencarrow is by taking the East by West Ferry from Queens Wharf to Days Bay. Bikes and dogs are welcome on board! 🚲🐾 From there, ride or walk along the coast to the Pencarrow Lighthouse. If you’re bringing a dog, note that they’re not allowed past the lighthouse due to nesting banded dotterels. If you have a bit more time, check out these hikes in the park: Butterfly Creek Track 🦋 – A lush forest walk ending at a peaceful picnic spot. Mt Lowry Track ⛰ – A steep climb but worth it for the panoramic views over Wellington Harbour. Northern Walkway 🌿 – A great option for a longer, more challenging hike through dense bush.
