Ready to elevate your hiking game this season? 🏞️ As an avid outdoor enthusiast, I've gathered some essential safety tips to ensure that you can start preparing for more challenging hikes. Whether you're planning to conquer new heights or explore hidden trails, understanding your physical limits is crucial! Remember: Safety always comes first when on the trail 🛡️🦺 🌦️❄️ Tip #1: Always check the weather forecast before heading out—it can change rapidly in the mountains and remote areas. And supplement the general forecast by checking out rain radars; weather warnings; and advice from you local Mountain Safety Council. 🥾🏔️ Tip #2: Choosing the right trail; match the hike's difficulty with your experience level to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Ask yourself questions like: How long will it take to complete your trip? Will you be able to finish it during daylight? What is the landscape like? Are there any dangerous parts or difficult sections? 🗓️🗒️ Tip #3: Sharing your itinerary with someone back home could be a lifesaver. Tell them where you are going and when you will be back. If they don’t hear from you by an agreed time, they should call local emergency services. There are lots of ways to share your plans by using websites (a good one in New Zealand is planmywalk.nz). You can also write down the information on paper for your trusted person, email them, or message/text them. 🧭🎒 Tip #4: Don’t forget to pack essential safety gear! A good waterproof jacket should be a part of everybody's hiking gear, and a good rule of thumb is to carry an extra day's worth of food. And don't forget things like a first aid kit; a compass; and physical maps (cellphone reception can get very patchy!) Pro tip: Including a personal locator beacon (PLB) can be a true lifesaver in emergencies. They can be expensive but are worth it, and you can always rent one if you don't hike that often. ⚠️🚨Remember, you can always stop regularly to eat, drink and rest. And don't be afraid to turn back for any reason!🚨⚠️ How important is safety to you in the outdoors? Drop a comment below with your favourite safety tip!
