Thinking about renting a car on your next international trip? Watch this before you book anything. First — do you actually need a car? In a country like Japan, France or Germany, public transit is efficient and easy. And in places like Guatemala Vietnam, or Peru, skip the rental entirely and take a shared shuttle — it’s cheaper and way less hassle. However in place Iceland, New Zealand, Ireland, or Costa Rica renting a car is safe, easy, parking is generally a breeze, and it gives you the freedom to explore completely on your own terms. Check if your destination requires an International Driving Permit before you travel. Some rental companies will hand you the keys without asking — but that doesn’t mean you’re legal to drive. Get stopped by local police without one and you’re getting fined, no questions asked. It’s one of those things that’s so easy to sort out before you leave at any Triple AAA office that there’s really no excuse not to. Skip the big chains at the airport. Read the reviews and look for a local rental company — they’re usually cheaper, more flexible, and honestly have Better service. We have had great experience with local companies over big chains. A lot of credit cards include rental car insurance as a free benefit — which could save you a serious amount of money. But please do your homework here. Not all cards cover international rentals, some only offer secondary coverage, and there are usually exclusions you need to know about. Read the actual policy, call your card if you have to, and make sure you genuinely understand what you’re covered for before you decline the rental company’s insurance. Before you drive away — film everything. Walk around the entire car and take video of every scratch, dent, and scuff. If they try to charge you for damage you didn’t cause, that footage is your evidence. And watch out for the hidden costs nobody talks about — tolls, parking, and gas. Some countries use toll roads constantly, gas prices can be wild, and city parking? A nightmare. Factor all of that in before you think you got a deal. #carrental
