It’s been 3 years since I’ve been in Australia but I still don’t know if I’ll ever get used to this ☕️ Cafe’s open LATE. Back home I could wake up at 6am and find every cafe open but in Portugal - 9am can even be too early for cafes to be open. No sunrise coffee walks here 💔 🥤Single use plastic is banned in Portugal… but it’s not really enforced. I’ve been given plastic cups in bars, plastic spoons and even plastic bags and no one really bats an eyelid. Littering is also a BIG no in Australia, whereas unfortunately here I’ve noticed a lot of this plastic does end up in the waterways. 💋 Australian vs Portuguese greetings. I still have no idea how to greet people here in Portugal. A hug? A kiss? TWO kisses?? In Australia physical touch isn’t a normal way to greet people - greetings just aren’t very formal in Australia the way they are in Portugal. 🪩 Nightlife starts LATE. I remember when I was 18/19 in Australia I would be dressed and half drunk in the line for a club by 10pm… and then in bed with my maccas by 3am. 🕒 In Portugal clubs don’t even really open until 2am and if you’re in there at that time you’re probably dancing alone. 🍷 Alcohol is sold everywhere, and you don’t get ID’d. Supermarkets and the tiny corner stores sell everything from bottles of vodka, wine, beer, cider and premixed cocktails. You can even buy alcohol at self checkouts without ID. I went back to Australia last year and was refused service at the bottle shop because my ID was expired…? 🪩I have lived in Portugal for a year and a half and I haven’t been ID’d once, even when entering clubs. I actually struggle to remember what is typical in Australia now - but I’m sure I’ll get a lot of reverse culture shock when I go home.
