Songgwangsa was established towards the end of the Shilla Dynasty. Originally named Gilsangsa, it stood on a mountain known as “Songgwangsan” for its abundance of pine trees. In the early Joseon Dynasty, the temple was renamed Songgwangsa, at the same time the name of the mountain was changed to Jogyesan.
