Quick Guide to Seongsan Ilchulbong Formed by a volcanic eruption over 5,000 years ago, this UNESCO site is one of Jeju’s most iconic spots, especially at sunrise. The hike to the top takes around 20–30 minutes with stairs all the way up and a few benches for a sit down if you need to catch your breath. In total, you should plan to spend an hour to an hour and a half heading up, down, and enjoying the views in between. Tips: - The walk up can be steep in parts, but it’s all stairs with railings. Comfortable shoes are recommended, but my Birkenstocks were just fine for me. Know yourself. - Because it’s the sunrise peak, many people will go early in the morning. It’s one site where going early may not always be less crowded. But even visiting at 10:00am, the crowds weren’t overwhelming. - There are two paths, one that you have to pay for that takes you all the way up, and one that is free and goes around the side to see the dramatic cliffs. Make the trek up to the top first as the descending path brings you down on the other side to the free path. - Do you need to wear hiking clothes for this experience? Nope. I wore a dress as you can see. It’s not the strenuous hike of Hallasan, so if you’re comfortable in it, you’ll be good to go. That said, Jeju can be very windy so consider that your warning.
