Have you ever rented a car where you had to drive on the opposite side of the road then you are used to? We traveled to Ireland with my in-laws last October and rented a car. None of us had driven on the opposite side of the road before or roads that narrow. By the end of the 10 days we did much better but that first few days was a lot of screaming, yelling and reminding the driver “OPPOSITE SIDE”. The narrow roads weren’t as big of an issue for us as we stuck to the main roadways most of the time but occasionally we ran into a very tiny road and made passing nearly impossible! On a side note, if you are planning on renting a car in Ireland and don’t want to pay for extra insurance they will put a €5,000 hold on your card. Most insurance that comes with premium credit cards do NOT cover Ireland! Here are some tips if you plan on driving in Ireland: 1. Try to get a small-ish car. The larger the car the harder those narrow roads will be to navigate! 2. We found it helpful to have the navigation up on the screen for the driver so they would have a visual of what way they planned to turn. 3. Avoid city driving as much as possible. In Belfast and Dublin, we parked the car and did not move it the entire time we were there. That made it much less stressful! Bigger cities have public transit so take advantage! 4. The more you drive the more comfortable you will be with doing the opposite of what you are used to! 5. If you are a passenger don’t distract the driver 🤣 I shouldn’t need to say that in general but here we are! 6. If you are renting a car, make sure to take your own videos and send them to the car rental email they give you so they can’t charge you for damage that was already there! 7. They have rolls in Ireland. Every one we went to took tap credit card!
