Revolutionary Name
The bridge was originally named 'Salazar Bridge' after the Portuguese dictator António de Oliveira Salazar. After the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974, which overthrew the Estado Novo regime, it was renamed '25 de Abril Bridge' to commemorate the event.
San Francisco Connection
Often mistaken for a twin of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge due to its similar red-orange color and suspension design. Both bridges were also built by the same company, American Bridge Company.
Dual-Level Structure
The bridge is a unique dual-level structure. The upper deck carries six lanes of road traffic, while the lower deck, added in 1999, carries two railway tracks.
