# AI did not fix travel booking. It fixed everything before it.

Most of what has been written about AI and travel this year is about itinerary generation. Type a prompt, get five days in Tokyo. That is the least interesting thing AI did to this industry. Planning was never the scarce skill: you could get that itinerary in 2015, and the reason people did not follow it had nothing to do with the quality of the plan.

We build a travel app, so read this as a view from inside a specific bet rather than a neutral survey. The parts worth arguing about are not about any one product. They are about which constraint actually moved.

## The defect was frequency, not planning quality

Travel software has an unusual problem: the customer is only a customer for about three weeks a year. Every metric the category is judged on inherits that. Weak retention has been treated as a law of nature, something you route around with lifecycle email and seasonal reactivation.

It is not a law. It is an artifact of when the software was permitted to be useful. An app that only opens during a trip competes for a rare moment. A product that opens whenever someone encounters travel content competes for a common one, and people encounter travel content nearly every day, including in the long stretches when they have no trip booked and no destination in mind.

Nobody built for that moment before because it produces the wrong kind of material: a vertical video with a voice-over, a screenshot of someone else's screenshot, a name spoken once and never spelled. Reading it required a human. That is the actual unlock. AI made the ambient, pre-intent moment machine readable and converted an episodic category into a habitual one. Nothing about better planning could have done that.

The general version, for anyone outside travel: if your product is only useful during an episode, the episode sets your ceiling. The fix is not a better product for the episode. It is finding the daily behavior that precedes it.

## Coverage stopped being a moat

Most durable travel businesses of the last forty years were coverage businesses. Guidebooks, review inventories, city guides, local supply operations: the barrier to entry was the labor of being present in enough places. You won by grinding out one city at a time, and once you had, nobody caught you quickly.

When the input becomes the world's public content, that barrier collapses. Coverage arrives as a byproduct rather than an achievement, and a product built this way is geography agnostic on day one, not because anyone planned an expansion but because its users already watch content from everywhere. That retires the industry's oldest defensive position. Content coverage is now free. Context is not.

## Which is why everyone is converging on the middle

Social platforms are pushing down-funnel, making the stays and experiences inside travel videos directly bookable. Booking platforms are pushing up-funnel, building inspiration feeds and assistants. They are not drifting toward each other by accident. They are reaching for the same asset, and it is neither content nor inventory.

The feed knows what you watched. The booking platform knows what you paid. Remarkably little in this industry knows what you are trying to do: who you are traveling with, what you saved and quietly dropped, what you can spend, what you will not repeat. That layer is the contested territory of the next few years, and it is the one thing here you cannot buy. It accumulates one traveler at a time.

## What AI did not change: fulfillment

The most informative travel story of the year was not reported as a travel story. In March, OpenAI [walked back its plan to handle checkout directly inside ChatGPT](https://skift.com/2026/03/05/openai-chatgpt-checkout-walkback/), routing bookings out to established travel platforms and keeping ChatGPT in discovery. Booking and Expedia shares rose roughly ten percent, which tells you how the market read it.

Two things were happening at once. On the supply side, payments, customer service, and fulfillment at travel scale are a genuinely different business from answering questions well. On the demand side, and this should unsettle anyone building here, people were glad to ask for ideas but left when it was time to enter a card. Trust for recommendation and trust for transaction are not the same trust.

Intent generation and fulfillment have completely different cost curves, and AI bent only one of them. Generating qualified intent is now close to free. Fulfilling it costs what it did five years ago: real payments, inventory truth, cancellation windows, refunds, chargebacks, taxes due at the property rather than at checkout, someone answering at two in the morning in a timezone you do not operate in. Little of that is a model problem. Most of it is a liability problem, and liability does not compress.

So the honest prediction is not that agents will book your trips. It is that they will produce more qualified intent than this industry has ever had to absorb, against a fulfillment capacity that did not grow. When demand generation stops being the constraint, margin follows the constraint to demand absorption. Intent without fulfillment is a lead generation business, which is a real business but a much smaller one than the decks imply.

## What AI also did not change: taste is not specifiable in advance

Agent design tends to assume the user knows what they want and needs a better interface for saying it. Travel disproves this daily. Travelers cannot state their constraints up front. They recognize them when they see a draft: too much walking on day two, three temples when they wanted one, an evening with no room to be bored.

The consequence is concrete. For decisions driven by taste rather than optimization, the right output is a fast, revisable draft, not a confident final answer. The confident answer is worse than useless, because it hands the burden of articulation back to someone who cannot articulate. Optimize for how cheap it is to change the answer, not how impressive the first one looks. This is not travel-specific. It applies to every agent sitting in front of a decision whose preferences are only legible in hindsight.

## Three second-order effects

**Supply-side aggregation is no longer defensible.** The marketplace instinct is to lock up supply first. In travel content the supply already exists publicly, at a scale no company could commission, for free. Recruiting creators to produce more of it, absent demand, rebuilds an inventory that is already there. The scarce act is structuring it and attaching it to someone actually going somewhere.

**Paid acquisition became a diagnostic rather than a skill.** Where the product is cheap to copy, acquisition cost moves when the product changes, not when the creative does. Treat it as an instrument reading. And be suspicious in the other direction: ad platforms optimize toward whatever proxy you hand them, and cheap installs are the easiest proxy to over-optimize into users who never come back.

**Creator partnerships shift from awareness to attributed conversion.** Travel creators were paid for reach because reach was the only measurable thing. Once a save, a plan, and a booking trace back to a specific piece of content, the deal structure changes, and so does which creators are worth paying. Reach and conversion are not the same population.

## What this adds up to

Within a year, AI itinerary generation will be table stakes everywhere and roughly equally good, because it is the same handful of models underneath. Nobody wins on it. Differentiation moves to two places: the accumulated context that makes a plan personal, and the operational depth to carry that plan through to something booked, paid for, and supported when it goes wrong.

The question for the next two years is not which system plans a better trip. It is which product earns its way into the moment before the trip exists, and whether it can carry that intent all the way through to the part nobody enjoys building.

AI did not fix travel booking. It changed what comes before it: frequency, coverage, and who really owns traveler intent. A view from inside the industry.

What AI Actually Changed in Travel (2026)

Ask ChatGPT for the best restaurants in Lisbon and you get a good answer. You also get the same answer as everyone else who asked that week.

Meanwhile the algorithm on your phone has spent two years learning that you like tiny natural wine counters, that you travel with a toddler, and that you will walk forty minutes for good coffee. It has been showing you exactly those places all along.

So stop asking a chatbot to invent a trip. Let the feed find the places, then let AI do what it is genuinely great at: structure, routing and decisions.

So do not start with "plan me five days in Seoul". Start with the videos you already saved. They are a preference dataset about you that no prompt can reconstruct.

## Step 2: Extract the places out of the videos

The order matters, because each decision constrains the next:

1. **Route first.** Group your saved places into days by where they actually are.
2. **Hotel second.** Once you know where your days happen, the right hotel is the one inside the cluster, not the one with the best photos in a neighborhood you will never walk through. ## Honest limitations

Extraction is only as good as the video. If a creator names the venue in the caption, on screen or in the description, it is reliable. A moody montage with no names anywhere gives no app anything to work with, and you will be adding those by hand.

## Kyoto's hidden temples

Kyoto has more than 1,600 temples, so the famous handful are only ever the surface.


**Otagi Nenbutsu-ji** sits in the hills of far western Arashiyama, past where most tour buses turn around. Its draw is a hillside of roughly 1,200 rakan statues, the disciples of the Buddha, carved between 1981 and 1991 by amateur sculptors under the temple's guidance. Because each one is different, the mood is playful rather than solemn: one holds a tennis racket, another a cup of sake, many are simply grinning under a cap of moss.

**Giō-ji**, also in Arashiyama, is small enough to see in fifteen minutes and worth an hour anyway. Its garden grows seventeen species of moss under a canopy of maples, a soft green carpet that turns the whole place into a single quiet room. The temple carries a sad story from the Tale of the Heike, which is part of why it stays so still.

**Kurama-dera** is a mountain temple about thirty minutes north of the city by train, and the reason to go is as much the walk as the shrine. The Kurama to Kibune hike runs roughly four to five kilometers through cedar forest, past sub-shrines and towering trees, and takes about two hours at an easy pace. The forest is also tied to the origins of Reiki, which adds to the hush.

If you want one temple inside the city that still feels grand, **Kennin-ji** in Gion is Kyoto's oldest Zen temple, founded in 1202. Look up in the Dharma Hall for the Sōryū-zu, a pair of dragons that fill the entire ceiling.

## Osaka's vintage side

Kyoto is the temples. Osaka is the hunt.

**Sennichimae Doguyasuji** is a covered arcade near Namba, about 150 meters of shops that have sold knives, pots, and hyper-real plastic food samples for more than 130 years. It is where Osaka's chefs go, and it is one of the best places in Japan to buy a carbon-steel knife you will actually keep.

For clothes, **Amerika-mura** and the adjacent **Orange Street** (Tachibana-dori) form one of the country's top vintage-clothing districts, heavy on American denim, band tees, and workwear. A short ride north, **Nakazakicho** trades the noise for Showa-era backstreets full of small vintage shops and slow cafes, the kind of neighborhood you wander without a plan. For pure retro atmosphere, **Shinsekai** ("New World") rounds it out.

## Beyond the two cities

The collection reaches past Kyoto and Osaka, because Kansai is small and the trains are fast. **Nara** brings Todai-ji, one of the world's largest wooden buildings, and the cherry-covered slopes of Mount Yoshino. **Kobe** adds the Nunobiki Herb Gardens above the harbor. And for castle people there is **Himeji**, Japan's finest surviving castle, plus the "castle in the sky" ruins of **Takeda** on their morning cloud sea.

Kansai Insider: Secret Temples and Vintage Markets (2026)

Walk into a naengmyeon restaurant in Seoul on a hot day and you will hear the same question at almost every table: mul or bibim? Naengmyeon (냉면) means cold noodles, and in the Korean summer it is close to a national reflex. The lines are longest from June through September, and everyone has an opinion about which bowl is the real one.

If you are new to it, the choice can be confusing, because two different things are being described at once: how the noodles are served, and where the style comes from. ## What naengmyeon is

Naengmyeon is a cold noodle dish that dates back to the Joseon period. It became widely popular across South Korea after the Korean War, carried south by people who fled the North, which is why its two most famous styles are named after northern cities. The noodles are thin and chewy, made from buckwheat, potato starch, or sweet potato starch depending on the style, and the dish is served genuinely cold, often with ice in the broth.


Two words describe how it arrives at your table, and two describe its lineage:
- Mul and bibim describe the serving. Mul means water, so mul-naengmyeon comes in cold broth. Bibim means mixed, so bibim-naengmyeon is tossed in a spicy sauce with no broth.
- Pyongyang and Hamhung describe the lineage. Pyongyang style is the brothy, buckwheat-forward one. Hamhung style is the chewy, spicy, starch-noodle one.

In practice, Pyongyang naengmyeon is usually served as mul, and Hamhung naengmyeon is usually served as bibim, which is why the terms get used interchangeably.

Mul-naengmyeon is the quiet one. Pyongyang style leans on buckwheat noodles in a clean, cold beef or dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth, seasoned with little more than salt, so the flavor is subtle and refreshing. First-timers often start here. Bibim-naengmyeon is the loud one. Hamhung style uses chewy sweet potato or potato starch noodles, springy and almost translucent, dressed in a fiery, slightly sweet gochujang sauce. When it is topped with a tangle of seasoned raw fish, it gets its own name, hoe-naengmyeon.

## How to eat it like a local

A few habits separate a confident bowl from a confused one:

- Use the scissors. The noodles are long and very chewy, and every naengmyeon restaurant puts scissors on the table for a reason. Snip across the bowl two or three times before you start.
- Season to taste. Mul-naengmyeon usually comes with vinegar and hot yellow mustard on the side. Add a little at a time. Some people also stir mustard or vinegar straight into the broth.
- Taste before you mix. For bibim-naengmyeon, take a bite before tossing everything, then mix thoroughly so the sauce coats every strand.
- Expect the classic toppings. A bowl of mul-naengmyeon typically arrives with julienned cucumber, a few slices of Korean pear, pickled radish, and a boiled egg or cold sliced beef, or both.

## How these apps actually differ

The category splits into three generations, and knowing which generation an app belongs to tells you what it will and won't do for you.

### Generation 1: manual place diaries

Mapstr is the classic. Millions of users keep a personal map of favorite spots, and it's lovely, but *you* do the typing. Nothing gets extracted from social media; the app doesn't know your saved Reels exist.
