Introduction

In 1947, a significant wildfire dramatically altered Acadia National Park's landscape, initiating ecological changes that persist today. The fire, which started near a Bar Harbor dump amidst severe drought conditions, consumed over 17,000 acres of Mount Desert Island and Acadia, transforming the park's forest composition. Prior to the fire, conifer trees like spruce, balsam fir, and eastern white pine dominated. The blaze cleared these conifers, allowing sunlight to reach the ground and enabling deciduous trees such as beech, oak, aspen, and maple to flourish. This shift led to the vibrant autumnal displays now characteristic of Acadia.

The fire's intensity was exacerbated by strong winds, causing it to spread rapidly and threaten nearby towns, including Bar Harbor, resulting in a mass evacuation. While the park's iconic structures largely survived, many grand estates and homes were destroyed. Post-fire, the altered landscape also influenced mercury and nitrogen dynamics in the park's watersheds. Studies comparing burned and unburned areas revealed lower mercury and dissolved inorganic nitrogen export from the burned Cadillac Brook watershed, attributed to elemental volatilization during the fire and subsequent changes in forest species composition.

1947 Fire Ecology

For almost a century, the federal government prohibited the Wabanaki from harvesting sweetgrass within the park's boundaries, until regulations in 2015 allowed federally recognized tribes to gather certain plants, renewing cultural practices.

Acadia National Park collaborates with the Abbe Museum, centering Indigenous perspectives in its exhibitions and correcting past misrepresentations. The museum, a Smithsonian affiliate, houses the largest documented collection of Maine Indian basketry. The park also hosts the Cultural Connections in the Park program in partnership with the Abbe Museum, offering free public events. Wabanaki Heritage

While sandy beaches are limited, Sand Beach stands out with its composition of finely ground shell fragments. The relentless action of the Atlantic surf continues to modify sea cliffs, sea caves, and wave-cut platforms. Coastal Maine Geology

Acadia National Park's distinctive feature is its 45-mile network of rustic carriage roads, a gift from John D. Rockefeller Jr. and his family. Constructed between 1913 and 1940, these roads were Rockefeller's solution to maintaining a motor-free means of accessing the heart of Mount Desert Island by horse and carriage. The design and construction were overseen by Rockefeller himself, with guidance from Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., reflecting techniques he learned from his father.

These broken-stone roads, approximately 16 feet wide, exemplify early 20th-century road-building practices, requiring extensive hand labor. Engineered to withstand Maine's wet climate, the roads incorporate stone culverts, wide ditches, three layers of rock, and a crowned surface for effective drainage. Rather than altering the natural landscape, retaining walls were built to preserve hillsides and trees. Rockefeller aligned the roads to follow the land's contours, maximizing scenic views.

The carriage road system includes sixteen unique granite bridges and two Tudor Revival gatehouses where the system intersects public roads. The bridges, constructed from hand-hewn, locally quarried granite, were designed to blend seamlessly into the landscape and serve as viewing platforms. Granite coping stones, known as "Rockefeller's teeth," line the roads as guardrails. Today, these roads are open to pedestrians, bicyclists, and horse-drawn carriages, offering a unique way to experience the park. The network was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and again in 1994.
