Original Purpose
Before becoming a museum, the building served as a public bathhouse, built in 1913, during the Japanese colonial period. It was one of the largest and most luxurious bathhouses in East Asia at the time.
Traditional Flooring
The museum still features tatami mats in some areas, preserving the traditional Japanese flooring style that was common in the original bathhouse.
Hot Spring Source
The hot spring water that supplied the original bathhouse is rich in sulfur, giving it a distinctive smell and therapeutic properties. Beitou is known for its sulfur springs.
