The campanile (bell tower) is the only visible remnant of the old village of Curon (Graun), which was submerged in 1950 to create a hydroelectric dam.
Location of the Tower
The bell tower stands eerily in the middle of Lake Resia (Reschensee), a man-made reservoir in the municipality of Curon Venosta in South Tyrol, Italy.
Village Submerged
In 1950, the villages of Curon and Resia were intentionally flooded to merge two natural lakes, creating a larger reservoir for a new power plant.
Walkable Access
During winter, when Lake Resia freezes over, visitors can actually walk across the ice directly to the base of the bell tower.
