Did You Know?
Geological Origin
The Seven Coloured Earths are a result of volcanic activity. The basalt lava was transformed into clay minerals.
Color Culprits
The different colours are due to varying amounts of iron and aluminum oxides in the soil. Red/brown hues come from iron, while blue/violet hues are from aluminum.
Non-Mixing Sands
Despite being exposed to the elements, the different coloured sands don't mix together. This is due to the different densities of the particles and slight chemical repulsion.
Erosion Display
The area is an example of open-air, exposed earth, where all water-soluble elements have been washed away.
