Crusade Siege
In 1209, a crusade against the Cathars, who were protected by the Viscount of Carcassonne, led to a 15-day siege of the Cité. The Viscount was poisoned and died in his own castle's prison.
Decadence and Renaissance
After the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, the Cité lost its defensive role and fell into decline. Houses were even built against the ramparts using stones from the monument.
Charlemagne's Siege
A legend tells of a pig that was the deciding factor in Charlemagne's decision to lift a siege of the Cité. The pig was the last remaining food for the residents, and its presence convinced Charlemagne that they wouldn't surrender.
Medieval Stronghold
Between the 11th and 13th centuries, the Cité became a stronghold, with the construction of the château comtal of the Trencavels, Viscounts of Carcassonne. This was a time of troubadours and courtly love.
