Eilean Donan is named after Donnán of Eigg, a Celtic saint who was martyred in 617. The island is said to have been the site of his church, though no remains exist today.

Early Fortification
Evidence suggests that an Iron Age or early medieval fortification existed on the island before the castle was built. Fragments of vitrified stone, which have been subjected to very high temperatures, have been discovered.
