Hurricane Maria Impact
Hurricane Maria, which devastated Puerto Rico in 2017, had a significant impact on El Yunque National Forest. The storm caused widespread damage and contributed to the loss of thousands of lives across the island.
Spiritual Significance
El Yunque has a rich history of spiritual significance dating back to pre-Columbian times. Petroglyphs, or rock art, found throughout the forest depict scenes related to ancient spiritual beliefs.
Name Change
In 2007, the Caribbean National Forest was officially renamed El Yunque National Forest by President George W. Bush.
Endangered Species Recovery
El Yunque is home to the critically endangered Puerto Rican Parrot. In 2007, a new facility was built to help with the recovery of this species.
