Shrines of Enoshima
Hetsunomiya is one of the three main shrines collectively known as Enoshima Shrine. The others are Nakatsunomiya and Okutsunomiya, each dedicated to a different goddess.
Goddess of Music and Arts
Hetsunomiya is dedicated to Tagitsuhime-no-Mikoto, one of the three goddesses enshrined on Enoshima. The island is particularly famous for worshipping Benzaiten, the goddess of music, performing arts, and good fortune, though she is enshrined more prominently at Hetsunomiya and Ogamiyashiro.
Rebuilt by Minamoto no Sanetomo
While the shrine's origins are much older, Hetsunomiya was notably rebuilt in 1206 by Minamoto no Sanetomo, the third shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, demonstrating its historical importance.
Main Hall
The main hall of Hetsunomiya is called 'Miyabashira'. It's a striking vermillion-lacquered structure that stands out against the lush green of the island.
