Names
Fort San Domingo has been known by at least four different names throughout its history: 'Fort Antonio', 'Fort Hollandia', 'Fort Anping' (a common misnomer), and 'Fort San Domingo'.
First Builders
The original fort on this site, though not the current structure, was built by the Dutch in 1629. It was initially named 'Fort Antonio' and later 'Fort Hollandia'.
Local Nickname
Due to its European origins, the fort is locally known as 'Hongmao City' (紅毛城), which translates to 'Red-Haired City', a reference to the fair hair of the Dutch and later British occupants.
Last Occupants
After various periods of control, the British established their consulate there in 1867, making significant renovations and expanding the complex. They occupied it until 1972.
