Former Guesthouse
Gilsangsa Temple was originally a luxurious guesthouse and restaurant called 'Daewongak' run by a famous kisaeng (Korean courtesan) named Kim Yeong-han (also known as Gilsanghwa) in the 20th century. She later donated the property to the Buddhist community.
Nun's Transformation
Kim Yeong-han eventually renounced her worldly life and became a Buddhist nun, dedicating her former property to the Venerable Beopjeong Sunim, a renowned monk known for his 'non-possession' philosophy.
Temple's Founding Year
The official founding of Gilsangsa Temple as a Buddhist monastery occurred in 1997, after Kim Yeong-han's donation and the subsequent transformation of the property into a spiritual sanctuary.
