Discovery from the Depths
Unlike many sea caves explored by boat, the Grotta dello Smeraldo was initially discovered in 1932 by a local fisherman who stumbled upon it after the sea level had temporarily lowered, revealing a previously hidden opening.
Nativity Scene
One of the unique features of the Grotto is a ceramic nativity scene that was placed on the seabed inside the cave in 1956. It's a surreal sight, especially when viewed through the glowing emerald water.
Easy Access
To make the cave accessible to more visitors, an elevator was installed, allowing people to descend directly from the coastal road above into the grotto without needing to navigate steep paths or boat trips from the sea.
