Did You Know?
One of Five National Treasures
Hikone Castle is one of only five castles in Japan designated as a National Treasure, signifying its exceptional historical and architectural value.
Authentic Main Keep
Unlike many Japanese castles rebuilt after wars or natural disasters, Hikone Castle's main keep (tenshu) is one of only twelve in Japan that remains in its original form from the Edo period.
Completion Year
The construction of Hikone Castle began in 1603 and was completed in 1622, taking nearly two decades to build.
Borrowed Materials
Parts of Hikone Castle were actually moved and repurposed from other castles. For example, some of its stones and timber came from Sawayama Castle, which was dismantled after the Battle of Sekigahara.
