Did You Know?
Capital
Ancient Capital of Vietnam

Hoa Lu was the first capital of the independent Đại Cồ Việt kingdom (an ancient name of Vietnam) from 968 to 1010 AD, serving as the political and economic center for three Vietnamese dynasties: Dinh, Early Le, and Ly.

Limestone
Natural Fortress

The strategic location of Hoa Lu, nestled amidst towering limestone karst mountains, provided a natural fortress, making it difficult for invaders to attack. This geological feature is a significant part of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

10th Century
Historic Temples

Although many original structures were destroyed, the Hoa Lu Ancient Capital still features two remarkably preserved 10th-century temples dedicated to the Dinh and Le dynasties: the Dinh Tien Hoang Temple and the Le Dai Hanh Temple.

Ly Thai To
Relocation to Thang Long

The capital was eventually moved from Hoa Lu to Thang Long (modern-day Hanoi) in 1010 by Emperor Ly Thai To, who believed it offered a more auspicious location for the growing kingdom, marking the end of Hoa Lu's reign as the national capital.
