Standing at approximately 46 meters (151 feet) tall, Hokan-ji is the tallest wooden pagoda in Kyoto and a prominent landmark in the Higashiyama district.
Common Name
While its official name is Hokan-ji, the pagoda is more widely known as Yasaka Pagoda, especially by locals and tourists, due to its proximity to Yasaka Shrine.
Current Structure's Age
Although the temple's origins date back to 592 AD, the current five-story pagoda was rebuilt in 1440 by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori after being destroyed by fire.

Unlike many pagodas in Japan, Hokan-ji occasionally allows visitors to climb to the second floor, offering a unique glimpse into its traditional wooden construction and a view of the city.
