Kiyosu Castle served as the primary residence and strategic base of operations for Oda Nobunaga, one of Japan's most famous daimyo, during his early rise to power in the 16th century.
Castle's Legacy Moved
After Tokugawa Ieyasu decided to move the capital of Owari Province to Nagoya, Kiyosu Castle was dismantled, and many of its materials were used in the construction of the much larger Nagoya Castle in the early 17th century.
Modern Reconstruction
The current Kiyosu Castle standing today is a faithful reconstruction, completed in 1989, built on the site of the original castle's ruins to commemorate its historical significance.
Post-Nobunaga Power Play
Following Oda Nobunaga's assassination in 1582, the crucial Kiyosu Conference was held at the castle, where his top generals debated and decided the succession of the Oda clan and the future leadership of Japan.
