Original Name
Kokura Castle was originally known as Katsuyama Castle, meaning 'Victory Mountain Castle,' after the hill it was built upon.
Unique Construction
Unusually for a Japanese castle of its time, the main keep (tenshu) of Kokura Castle was built without a stone base, a construction method known as 'Kara-zukuri' (Chinese style).
Year Built
The current Kokura Castle was completed in 1602 by Hosokawa Tadaoki, a prominent daimyo during the Edo period.

The castle features a charming garden with a 'Kokura Tiger' statue, said to protect the castle and bring good luck.
