Number of Structures
Historically, Danjo Garan was said to have around 120 structures at its peak, though many have been lost to fires and rebuilt over centuries. Today, numerous significant buildings still stand.
Konpon Daito (Great Pagoda)
The Konpon Daito is an impressive two-tiered pagoda, over 48 meters tall, housing a mandalas (cosmic diagram) with statues of the Five Wisdom Buddhas, symbolizing the Shingon universe. It's unique for its vibrant colors.
Symbol of Rebirth
Due to numerous fires that have ravaged the precinct throughout its history, Danjo Garan, like a phoenix, has been repeatedly rebuilt and restored, symbolizing the enduring spirit of Koya-san.
