First
Toshogu Shrine

Kunōzan Tōshōgū was the very first Tōshōgū shrine ever built, dedicated to the deified Tokugawa Ieyasu. Its architectural style and layout heavily influenced subsequent Tōshōgū shrines, including the famous Nikkō Tōshōgū.

Ieyasu's
Final Resting Place

Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, was initially interred at Kunōzan Tōshōgū after his death in 1616. His remains were later moved to Nikkō Tōshōgū a year later, but a portion of his spirit is believed to remain at Kunōzan.

1617
Construction Year

The main shrine buildings were completed in 1617, just a year after Ieyasu's death, showcasing the rapid construction and importance placed on his enshrinement by his son, Tokugawa Hidetada.

National
Treasures & Important Cultural Properties

Many of the structures at Kunōzan Tōshōgū, including the main hall (honden) and worship hall (haiden), are designated as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties of Japan, recognized for their elaborate Momoyama-period architecture.
