Japanese Railway History

The Kyoto Railway Museum evolved from the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum, which opened in 1972 to commemorate the centennial of Japan's railway system. The Umekoji district, selected as the servicing center for maintaining steam engines, had been a transport hub since 1914 when two Kyoto steam locomotive depots were merged. This consolidation led to the construction of the 20-track roundhouse, a technically advanced reinforced concrete structure at the time, which remains a key feature of the modern museum.

Before becoming a museum, the Umekoji depot expanded to house trains on the Tōkaidō and San’yō routes, including the Tsubame and Kamome express trains. At its peak in 1946, it housed 87 trains. Even as steam locomotives faded from major lines in the mid-1950s, Japanese National Railways decided to preserve them in running condition at Umekoji.

The original Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum was a pioneer among railway museums, opening three years earlier than the National Railway Museum in York, England. Today, the Kyoto Railway Museum incorporates the historic roundhouse, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property, and displays locomotives previously exhibited at the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum. A connecting deck offers visitors a complete view of the roundhouse, turntable, and the Service Shed where steam engines are maintained.
