Did You Know?
Not Tar
The black gooey substance bubbling to the surface is actually asphalt, not tar. It's the lowest grade of crude oil and seeps to the surface throughout the park.
Ancient Origins
The asphalt originates from a large petroleum reservoir formed from marine plankton deposited in an ocean basin during the Miocene Epoch, which lasted from 5 to 25 million years ago.
Shallow Pits
Contrary to popular belief, the tar pits are only a few inches deep. Animals likely got stuck when covered by leaves and dirt, making the pits less obvious.
Fossil Collection
Over 100 excavations have been made at La Brea Tar Pits, yielding over a million bones from animals that got trapped in the asphalt over thousands of years.
