Introduction

Madison Square's historical evolution began in 1686 when the area, a swampy hunting ground crossed by Cedar Creek, was designated public land. By the 1700s, it served as a potter's field. In 1807, a large tract including the square was designated for military use, housing an arsenal and barracks. This evolved into the New York House of Refuge for juvenile delinquents in 1825, before being destroyed by fire in 1839.

The transformation continued with William "Corporal" Thompson's roadhouse, Madison Cottage, established in 1839. Though razed in 1852, it indirectly lent its name to Madison Avenue and the park. The park's "golden age" from 1870 to 1910 saw it become a cultural center, surrounded by hotels and restaurants. It was even considered a possible birthplace of baseball around 1842.

Innovation marked the square's progress. In the 1870s, the Cumberland apartment building utilized its back wall for advertising, including illuminated signs and projected images. The park hosted celebrations like the 1876 Centennial and displayed the Statue of Liberty's torch to raise funds for its pedestal. It was also among the first areas in the city to feature electric street lighting in 1879. The original Madison Square Garden was established in 1873, after a stint as a railway depot.

The park also witnessed social unrest, such as the 1901 rocking chair riot protesting pay-for-use seating. In 1918, a Victory Arch was erected to honor war dead, though it wasn't made permanent. A fireworks disaster on election night in 1902 resulted in multiple fatalities.

The Conservancy also acknowledges the park's location on Lenapehoking, the ancestral homeland of the Lenape (Delaware) people, recognizing the displacement and genocide they endured. In honor of the Lenape (Delaware) people, the park is committed to sustainability and restoration initiatives, aiming to reduce its carbon footprint, promote sustainable land management, and reintroduce indigenous species of fauna and flora. Noteworthy installations include Martin Puryear's "Big Bling," a 40-foot-tall sculpture that premiered in 2016, and Leonardo Drew's "City in the Grass" in 2019, a large-scale work made of aluminum, sand, wood, cotton, and mastic.

The Madison Square Park Conservancy collaborates with various arts organizations and artists to bring both experimental and traditional art to the public. These exhibitions are made possible through support from organizations such as the Ford Foundation, the Henry Luce Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Denise Markonish, formerly of MASS MoCA, became the park’s chief curator in late June 2025. Past exhibits include Shahzia Sikander's multimedia project "Havah...to breathe, air, life," which thematically explored women and justice across Madison Square Park and the nearby Courthouse of the Appellate Division.
