Contrary to common belief, the utilidors are not a basement. Due to Florida's high water table, they were constructed at ground level, and the Magic Kingdom was built above them, effectively making the park a story higher than ground level. This design choice was inspired by Walt Disney's desire to prevent backstage activities from disrupting the guest experience, such as a Frontierland cowboy traversing Tomorrowland in Disneyland.
