Introduction

The Coast Miwok people, the first inhabitants of Marin County, have a heritage deeply intertwined with the land now known as the Marin Headlands. Their presence dates back thousands of years, with oral histories tracing lineage back at least 10,000 years. The Coast Miwok thrived as careful stewards of the land, which provided abundant resources. They lived in villages throughout Marin and southern Sonoma counties, with each tribe consisting of a few hundred people led by a headman or headwoman.

The Coast Miwok carefully managed the land, including stands of oak trees that provided acorns, a staple food. They understood the yearly cycles of plants, gathering berries, bulbs, and tubers in a way that ensured future harvests. The Marin Headlands, part of their ancestral territory, holds village sites that are still being discovered.

The arrival of Europeans marked a turning point. While initial contact with the English in 1579 was amicable, the subsequent establishment of Spanish missions led to the enslavement of the Coast Miwok. Forced labor, unfamiliar food, and exposure to European diseases decimated their population. Despite these hardships, the Coast Miwok people have demonstrated resilience, continuing to live and thrive within their ancestral territories. Today, they maintain their traditions, including basketry, flint knapping, and clamshell bead making, and work to cultivate and maintain their tribal sovereignty. The Museum of the American Indian, located on Coast Miwok territory, stands as a testament to their enduring legacy.

Coastal Miwok Heritage

The Marin Headlands, a hilly peninsula in California, serves as a critical point in the Pacific Flyway for migrating raptors. Hawk Hill, reaching 920 feet, is the focal point for observing this migration, hosting the largest known concentration of migrating raptors in the Pacific states. Each autumn, from August to December, tens of thousands of hawks, kites, falcons, eagles, vultures, osprey, and harriers funnel into the headlands, avoiding flight over water. The peninsular shape of Marin County concentrates these birds, while the area's warm thermals and updrafts, created by winds hitting the hills, facilitate efficient flight.

The Golden Gate Raptor Observatory (GGRO), in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS), has tracked this migration since 1984. Volunteers meticulously count and track the raptors, using bird-banding and radio-tracking techniques to study their movement patterns and potential threats. Hawkwatchers identify raptors by their plumage, tail lift, and wing shape, differentiating between Buteos, Accipiters, and Falcons. The GGRO's data provides a crucial index of raptor population trends and informs conservation efforts. The most commonly observed species include Turkey Vultures, Red-tailed Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, and Sharp-shinned Hawks. Hawk Hill provides views stretching from Alcatraz to Mount Tamalpais, offering ideal conditions for observing and studying raptor migration.

Hawk Migration

The Marin Headlands stand as a prime example of geological accretion, where oceanic sediments from the Pacific Plate have been added to the North American Plate. This process, involving the subduction of the ocean floor and tectonic underplating, was initially described here in 1984. The area's geology features a variety of rock types including graywacke sandstone, radiolarian chert, serpentinite, pillow basalts, and shale, originating as far south as present-day Los Angeles over one hundred million years ago.

Folding is particularly evident in the regularly-layered cherts, where weaker shale layers allow chert layers to slide, accommodating extensive folding when compressed. Faulting is another common deformation, with at least 17 thrust faults placing deeper oceanic crust rocks over near-shore sediments. These faults sometimes mark the contact between vastly different rock units, such as serpentinite emplaced atop seafloor sediments.

The thickest stratigraphic section of chert, around 80 meters, is found within the Marin Headlands terrane, with structural thicknesses reaching 300 meters due to thrust faulting. This chert section represents the longest depositional history in the Franciscan Complex's oceanic plate stratigraphy, spanning from Pliensbachian to Cenomanian, approximately 191 to 94 million years ago. The Marin Headlands was among the first locations where fault repetition of pelagic biostratigraphy was recognized, linking basalt-pelagic-clastic succession and its imbrication to oceanic plate movement and subduction-accretion.

Geological Accretion

The Marin Headlands stand as a significant site within the Harbor Defenses of San Francisco, a role it held from the 1890s through the mid-20th century. Initially, military installations were erected in the 1890s to thwart hostile ships from entering San Francisco Bay. Examples of pre-World War I fortifications include the batteries at Kirby Cove, above Black Sands Beach, south of Rodeo Beach, and at Battery Mendell.

During World War II, Batteries Wallace, Townsley, and 129 on Hawk Hill were strategically built into the hills to shield them from aerial bombardment and high-caliber shells. The emplacements atop Hawk Hill served as a radio station. Battery Wallace, constructed during World War I and completed in 1921, was later fortified with massive concrete casemates during World War II to protect against aerial attacks. Connecting tunnels, a power plant, and ammunition magazines were added, and the site was covered with soil and brush for camouflage.

Observation posts, known as base end stations, are also present, with a well-preserved example near the northern end of Rodeo Beach and others near the Point Bonita Lighthouse and on Wolf Ridge. During the Cold War, gun batteries were decommissioned, replaced by antiaircraft missile sites on either side of Rodeo Lagoon. Radar sites were positioned atop Hawk Hill and Hill 88, and shelters were built into hillsides to protect personnel from nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons. Today, all military sites are decommissioned and repurposed for civilian use, with some, like SF-88, preserved as historical sites.
