Since 1934, the Palau Nacional has housed the Museu d'Art de Catalunya, later declared a national museum in 1990. Carles Buïgas designed the fountains adorning the staircases leading up to the Palau.

Between 1996 and 2004, an expansion project increased the Palau's capacity to accommodate the museum's extensive collection of over 5,000 artworks. The Oval Hall within the Palau Nacional was reopened for the 1992 Summer Olympic Games.
