Naksansa's history is marked by repeated destruction and reconstruction, a testament to its cultural significance and the persistent efforts to preserve it. Founded in 671, the temple has faced numerous fires and wars, each time rising from the ashes. The temple was destroyed by fire during the Mongolian invasion of the 13th century. During the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910), royal decrees led to repeated reconstruction and expansion efforts in 1467, 1469, 1631, and 1643. Before 2005, the facilities had been rebuilt in 1953, following destruction during the Korean War (1950–53).

A significant blow occurred on April 5, 2005, when a forest fire devastated most of Naksansa, melting the 15th-century bronze bell. This bell, built by King Yejong in 1469, was restored to its former splendor in October 2006 and enshrined in the Bell Pavilion. The Main Dharma Hall (Wontongbojeon) was originally built in 859, rebuilt in 1953 and again in 2007 after being destroyed in a fire. The Double Rainbow Gate (Hongyemun), initially constructed in 1467 with stones from Gangwon-do's 26 counties, was damaged in the 2005 fire and restored in 2006. The ongoing reconstruction efforts, with the support of locals and Buddhists, aim to restore Naksansa fully.

Temple's Historical Reconstruction

Naksansa, a temple overlooking the East Sea in Yangyang, Gangwon Province, is renowned for its iconic Haesugwaneumsang statue. This 16-meter-tall white granite statue of Gwanseum-bosal, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, stands prominently on a 2.8-meter-high pedestal, facing southeast. Dedicated in 1977, the statue, also known as the Bodhisattva of Mercy, took six months and 700 tons of granite to complete, and is the creation of Busan sculptor Gwon Jeong-hwan.

The Haesugwaneumsang statue is visible from Mulchi Harbor and is the largest of its kind in the Orient. The statue's eyes and fingers are closed in peaceful meditation as it gazes out to sea. Legend says that the monk Uisang, the founder of Naksansa, meditated for days on a seaside cliff, seeking Avalokiteśvara, and was directed to build the temple. Haesugwaneumsang Statue

The story of Uisang-daesa, a prominent figure in Korean Buddhism, is deeply intertwined with the founding and history of Buseoksa Temple. A key element of this narrative involves Lady Seonmyo, a Chinese woman who met Uisang-daesa while he was studying in Tang China. Learning of Uisang-daesa's impending return to the Korean peninsula and his homeland, the Silla Kingdom, she was heartbroken when he departed unexpectedly, spurred by news of a potential Tang Chinese attack.

In her sorrow, Lady Seonmyo tragically drowned herself in the sea, transforming into a dragon. This mythical transformation is a significant part of the temple's lore, symbolizing devotion and protection. The legend suggests that Lady Seonmyo, in her dragon form, played a crucial role in helping Uisang-daesa establish Buseoksa Temple, offering her power to safeguard the temple grounds.

The Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) documents this legend, highlighting the profound impact of Lady Seonmyo's sacrifice and her continued presence as a guardian spirit.
