Construction Began in 1700
The construction of Korakuen started in 1700 under the orders of Ikeda Tsunamasa, the second feudal lord of Okayama. It took 14 years to complete, showcasing the meticulous planning and dedication involved in its creation.
Pristine Edo Period Garden
Despite various challenges, including war damage, Okayama Korakuen has largely retained its original Edo Period (1603-1868) design and landscape. This makes it a rare and valuable example of a daimyō (feudal lord's) garden from that era.
Home to Japanese Cranes
The garden is home to a small number of Japanese cranes, which are released into the garden on New Year's Day and during special events. These elegant birds add to the garden's serene atmosphere and traditional charm.
