As its name suggests ('pal' meaning south and 'dal' meaning reaching or arriving), Paldalmun served as the main southern gate of Hwaseong Fortress.

Paldalmun was constructed starting in 1794 and completed in 1796, as part of King Jeongjo's ambitious project to build Hwaseong Fortress.
