Mythical Name
The city is named Fenghuang (Phoenix) after a local legend that two phoenixes flew over the city and found it so beautiful that they hovered there, refusing to leave.
Ancient Origins
While its history dates back further, the current layout and most of its preserved architecture largely originate from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with significant development in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Unique Architecture
A defining feature of Fenghuang Ancient City is its traditional stilt houses (Diaojiaolou) built along the banks of the Tuojiang River, designed to adapt to the riverside terrain and protect against floods.
